SHRM-Atlanta held its fourth annual Volunteer Kickoff on Friday, January 28 with more than 40 volunteers and board members in attendance. Volunteers were introduced to SHRM-Atlanta’s updated mission and vision statements, as well as the new strategic plan, and core values – all approved at the December Board meeting.

Some of the key takeaways from this annual event to prepare volunteers for the upcoming year included:

Strategic Plan Goals

SHRM-Atlanta’s new strategic plan will begin implementation in 2022 and will see SHRM-Atlanta through the next five years as the organization continues to evolve to meet the needs of its members and HR professionals throughout the Metro Atlanta area. These goals are:

  1. Membership Growth and Richer Engagement
  2. Advanced Thought Leadership and Content Curation
  3. Elevated Value of Resource Partner Relationships
  4. Organizational Excellence and Recognized Community Leadership

Updated Mission and Vision Statements

During the development of the new strategic plan, it was necessary to also refresh the mission and vision statements of SHRM-Atlanta to reflect the direction the organization is heading. These new statements reflect the aspirations of SHRM-Atlanta to further impact and support the Atlanta HR Community.

Vision Statement

Shape the Atlanta workforce and workplace, and develop HR professionals who transform their organizations and community

Mission Statement

Create best-in-class workforces and workplaces by developing HR professionals’ skills and knowledge, business acumen, and leadership capacity

Core Values

SHRM-Atlanta began the process of identifying a set of core values in 2021. Members were asked for their input by sharing the values that best described their SHRM-Atlanta community. These submissions were given to the HR for Change Committee to draft the first core value statements. After much dialogue between volunteer leaders and board members, the final version was presented and approved by the board at the December meeting and excitedly announced at the chapter meeting later that afternoon.

These Core Values are SHRM-Atlanta’s essential and enduring tenets, a small set of timeless, guiding principles that do not require external justification, and are so fundamental to the organization they seldom change.

  • We embrace diversity of thought and knowledge to offer expertise to the HR community
  • We recognize and support each other’s individualism with respect, compassion, empathy, and allyship
  • We champion the highest ethical and equitable standards of professional practice and accountability in HR
  • We value continuous learning to empower HR professionals to make a positive impact on the greater Atlanta business community
  • We lean into change as a necessary part of growth

Moving Forward – 2022 and Beyond!

With the new strategic plan in place implementation will include a greater focus on engagement for all members, and this includes elevating the volunteer experience. Each member that volunteers with SHRM-Atlanta chooses to do so to push forward the work and success of SHRM-Atlanta and to elevate the HR profession. Making sure this work ties back to the strategic plan, that members needs are being represented and met, and that the volunteer experience is beneficial to those who are volunteering are just some of the elements being taken into consideration as the strategic plan moves forward.

Additionally, SHRM-Atlanta’s volunteer and organizational structure will begin to shift and change to enable volunteers, staff, and members to achieve these new goals set forth by the strategic plan.
